Kuek Garang, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. Born in 1981 in Wernyol, Southern Sudan, left Sudan at 6 years old when he and his community were violently forced from their village during a 21 years civil-war by Khartoum Islamic Regime. Orphaned and with no support, southern Sudanese children walked for years as they searched for a place where they could safely resettle. Kuek and his young companions made an epic journey lasting years, crossing borders, evading thirst, starvation, wild animals, insects, and disease, until he and about 3800 other Lost Boys were resettled in the U.S. Kuek is truly a story of new life born from struggle. Kuek is one of the founders of Chicago Association for the Lost Boys of Sudan and now a board member (Served 2002, 2003 and 2005 to present time) of the Chicago Association for the Lost Boys of Sudan. He has earned an Associate Degree in Social Science (2006), and in January, 2008, he enrolled and is currently attending University of Illinois at Springfield as political Science Major. Most inspiring is Kuek's desire to rebuild and give back to the country wrecked by war. He is a Southern Sudanese and Darfur activist, and he is the President of Abek Community Development Program, which is a 501 (c) 3 status organization under IRS codes. He is working to build a school in his village in Sudan for children (704 children) of families returning to southern Sudan after years of displacement. Since 2007, Kuek is currently serving as a Deputy Chairman of the SPLM Chapter in Illinois. Before he attended University of Illinois at Springfield, he used to work as a case Manager for Heartland Human Care Service at Heartland's International Refugee Center, Chicago. Kuek was a case manager for After School Program and Drugs prevention, and Youth Group Network. |
